Xavier Roy Granted the Canada Council for the Arts’ John Hobday Award in Arts Management

He is the first Quebecer in over a decade to win the award

Joliette, November 1, 2021 – Xavier Roy, Executive Director of the Festival de Lanaudière, is one of two recipients of the John Hobday Awards in Arts Management granted annually by the Canada Council for the Arts to celebrate experienced and mid-career cultural managers.

The $10,000 award provides Xavier Roy with a year of mentoring with Janice Price, President and CEO of Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Together they will explore how to help large arts institutions in smaller urban communities, including the Festival de Lanaudière, balance their regional and international priorities.

“I am extremely grateful to have the confidence of the Canada Council for the Arts for this important award,” said Xavier Roy. “I am especially looking forward to working more actively with Janice Price, who is without question one of the greatest Canadian cultural managers in our history.”

Denis-Richard Roy, President of the Board of Directors of the Festival de Lanaudière, added: “Xavier has demonstrated dynamic and inclusive leadership since he joined the Festival 16 months ago, and the challenges of balancing regional and international priorities are at the heart of our new strategic plan. The Board of Directors of the Festival, the Foundation and the entire team join me in congratulating him!”

About the John Hobday Awards

The prizes, valued at $10,000 each, are administered by the Canada Council and allow the winners to further their professional skills by taking part in a recognized program, seminar, workshop, or mentorship with another experienced arts administrator. Launched in 2006, the Awards were created with a $1 million endowment from The Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation. John Hobday was the Executive Director of the Foundation from 1983 to 2002 and then Director of the Canada Council for the Arts from 2003 to 2006.

The other recipient of the 2021 John Hobday Award is Wafa Al Zaghal, President and Founder of the Festival of Arabic Music and Arts. Zaghal aims to build a creative space for the Arab community in Canada and help preserve Arabic classical and folk music.
